Early Life & Education

Raphael Tuju was born on March 30, 1959, in Rarieda, Siaya County. He attended Majiwa Primary School and Nakuru High School for his early education. He then joined Starehe Boys Centre for two years for his senior O-level studies.

He holds a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Mass Communications from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. This educational background laid the foundation for his successful career in media and communications before entering politics.

Before politics, Tuju built a successful media empire. He worked as a television news anchor in the late 1980s and early 1990s on a part-time basis. The Fall: From Billionaire to Bankruptcy

1. The KSh 933 Million Loan (2015)

In April 2015, Tuju through his company Dari Limited borrowed $9.3 million (approximately KSh 933 million) from the East African Development Bank (EADB) to finance property developments in Nairobi’s Karen suburb. This loan, meant to expand an already vast empire, became the proverbial poisoned chalice.

2. Debt Accumulation

After the loan fell into default, the debt grew through accumulated interest and legal costs. By 2026, the debt had ballooned to over KSh 4.5 billion (approximately $35 million), making it one of the largest personal debt cases in Kenyan history.

3. Auction and Eviction Crisis (March 2026)

On March 9, 2026, the High Court of Kenya cleared the way for the auction of Tuju’s properties after dismissing a case seeking to block the forced sale. Justice Josephine Wayua Mong’are struck out the application by Dari Limited and Tuju, lifting earlier interim orders that had temporarily stopped the auction.

The lender appointed Knight Frank as valuers and Garam Investment Auctioneers to handle the auction process. The properties under threat include:

4. Tuju’s Defiant Stand

“They will have to kill me first and organise a big burial for me in Rarieda before they take this property.”

Tuju argued that the court denied him an opportunity to appeal, claiming the Constitution 2010 grants him the right to appeal. He also alleged that attempts to evict him were part of a wider conspiracy and linked to previous events where individuals were arrested at his property.
