Early Life & Education

Babu Owino was born on October 10, 1989, in Nyalenda, Kisumu County, and grew up in a humble household. His father, Domnic Owino Orieyo, passed away when Babu was in Class Three, leaving his mother as the sole provider for the family. To support her children, Babu’s mother sold chang’aa, an illicit brew, despite the challenges and legal risks associated with this trade.

He attended Kisumu Township Primary School from 1995 to 2002, then transferred to Central Primary School in Kisumu. In 2003, he joined Kisumu Boys’ Secondary School, where he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2006, scoring an impressive A-minus.

After secondary school, he received a scholarship through Cambridge Systems to pursue A-levels at Millennium Academy, where he completed the program and graduated with six diplomas in various disciplines including Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, Law, Accounting, Chemistry, and Statistics.

In 2008, Owino joined the University of Nairobi to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science, graduating in 2012 with First Class Honors. In 2013, he enrolled at the same university for a Law Degree (LLB), graduating with Second Class Honors, Upper Division.

In January 2020, Owino was arrested for shooting an unarmed nightclub DJ, Felix Orinda (known as DJ Evolve), in the neck at close range at B-Club in Nairobi’s Kilimani area. He was charged with attempted murder and jailed for seven days before being released on bail. He claims he acted in self-defense after being provoked.

He has also faced charges related to hate speech, threats, and assaults throughout his political career.
