Early Life & Education

Sabastian Sawe was born on March 16, 1996, in Kenya. He grew up in a modest environment, raised largely by his grandmother, whom he affectionately calls “Koko.” His grandmother instilled in him the values of patience and perseverance, which would later define his running career.

His uncle, Abraham, a former runner himself, played a crucial role in Sawe’s early athletic development. Abraham provided him with proper running shoes, rent support, and training kit, giving him advantages that many aspiring athletes in Iten lacked. “I had surplus bags from my career,” Abraham recalls. “I was happy to help.”

Sawe initially trained in Iten, the renowned Kenyan running hub, but struggled to stand out among hundreds of world-class hopefuls. In 2019, at a track meeting in Kakamega, he arrived too late for his intended event and ended up running the 5000m with no warm-up or race plan. To his surprise, he clocked 13:56, the fastest time of the day, revealing his exceptional endurance potential.

In 2020, with his uncle’s guidance, Sawe joined the 2Running training camp in Kapsabet, coached by Italian trainer Claudio Berardelli. This move proved transformative. The camp provided professional structure, recovery protocols, and medical support that were largely absent in his previous training environment.

Sawe’s professional career began gaining momentum in 2022 when he set a course record at the Rome-Ostia Half Marathon with a time of 58:02. He followed this with a Kenyan national record in the one-hour run at the Brussels Memorial Van Damme, covering 21,250 meters.

In September 2022, he set a then half marathon best of 58:58 at the Bahrain Royal Night Half Marathon. He also won the Kenyan national cross-country title and finished seventh at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships, contributing to Kenya’s team gold medal.

2. World Half Marathon Champion (2023)

In October 2023, Sawe claimed the World Half Marathon title in Riga, Latvia, leading a Kenyan sweep. “One of my happiest moments,” he recalls. “This proved that I was a runner.” This victory established him as a major force in international road racing.

Sawe made his full marathon debut at the Valencia Marathon in December 2024, winning with a world-leading time of 2:02:05, the second-fastest debut ever recorded. In April 2025, he won the London Marathon in 2:02:27, followed by a victory at the Berlin Marathon in September 2025 with a time of 2:02:16.

4. Historic Sub-2 Hour Marathon (April 26, 2026)

On April 26, 2026, at the London Marathon, Sabastian Sawe made history by becoming the first person to run a sub-two-hour marathon in competitive, eligible race conditions. He crossed the finish line in 1:59:30, shattering the previous world record of 2:00:35 held by the late Kelvin Kiptum.

The race featured unprecedented depth, with Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha also finishing under two hours (1:59:41) and Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo breaking the barrier as well (2:00:28). Sawe’s victory was 65 seconds faster than Kiptum’s previous record and 10 seconds quicker than Eliud Kipchoge’s 2019 Ineos 1:59 Challenge performance, which was not recognized as an official record due to controlled conditions.

“I’m so happy. It’s a day to remember for me,” Sawe said after the race on BBC. “Approaching the end of the race, I was feeling strong, and my fellow Ethiopian (Kejelcha) was so competitive, I think he was the one who helped a lot. And finally reaching the finishing line, I saw the time, and I was so excited to see running a world record today. I think today shows me there is a time for everyone and I’m so happy.”
