Wavinya Ndeti was born on November 8, 1967, in Mua Hills, Machakos County, into a family with deep political roots. She is the great-granddaughter of Muindi Mbingu, the renowned Kamba freedom fighter who led resistance against British colonial land policies in 1937. Her father, Mzee Peter Nzuki Ndeti, was a World War II veteran who served as a councillor in the Legislative Council of Kenya (LegCo) from 1945 to 1992 and was personal secretary to Muindi Mbingu during the independence struggle.

As the last born of 10 children, Wavinya grew up in a politically active household where visitors were always welcome. Her father pioneered the establishment of Mavoko Municipality, and her late brother Ignatius Dick Ndeti later served as councillor of Athi River.

Her educational journey took her to the United Kingdom, where she earned:

• BSc in Computer Science – London South Bank University (1994-1995)
• MSc in Business Systems Analysis and Design – City, University of London (1992)
• MBA – Heriot-Watt University, Scotland

Between 1993 and 1994, she worked as a Systems Developer at the University of North London, specializing in designing and implementing computer systems for institutional operations.

Political Career & Journey to Governor

Wavinya Ndeti’s political journey began in 2007 when she made history as the first woman elected Member of Parliament for Kathiani Constituency under the Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) party. She won by a landslide with over 27,000 votes against her closest competitor’s 9,000 votes.

In the Grand Coalition Government (2008-2013), she was appointed Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports, where she focused on empowering young people through training, sports development, and entrepreneurship programs.

She contested the Machakos gubernatorial seat in 2013 and 2017 but lost both times to Alfred Mutua. In 2017, she ran under the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K) following the Emali Declaration agreement. Despite legal challenges regarding her nomination and party membership, she persisted.

Between elections, she served in key government positions:

• 2019: Appointed Chairperson, Governing Council of Kenya Water Institute (KEWI)
