Early Life & Education

Raymond Omollo was born on December 27, 1979, in Homa Bay County in the southern part of Nyanza region. His early life was marked by significant hardship when his father passed away in 1985 when Raymond was just eight years old. This loss forced the family to move from Kisumu back to their village, where he experienced extreme poverty.

“When we lost our father, there was a significant shift in our lifestyle. We moved from Kisumu back to the village, and eventually, I ended up living with relatives. It was during that time that I truly understood what poverty meant—surviving on just one meal a day. Over time, it became normal, as it was the reality for everyone,” he recalls.

Despite these challenges, Omollo saw education as his pathway to opportunity. He attended multiple primary schools including Muslim Primary School Kisumu, Omolo Agar Primary School Homa Bay, and Rang’i Primary School Homa Bay. He then proceeded to Mbita High School for his secondary education.

His academic excellence led him to the University of Nairobi, where he was among the first eight students to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Biometry from the University of Nairobi and a Ph.D. in Applied Statistics from Maseno University. He also received a Biostatistics and Epidemiology scholarship from the University of Washington in Seattle, USA.

1. Early Career (2005-2007)

Omollo began his career as a researcher and data manager at the University of Nairobi, laying the foundation for his expertise in statistics and data analysis.

2. DNDi Africa (2007-2019)

He joined the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi) Africa, an international non-profit organization focused on research and development for neglected diseases. He served as Head of Data Center and Statistician, responsible for departmental strategy formulation and implementation. During this period, he collaborated with WHO and FAO on development challenges affecting vulnerable communities across Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Benin.

3. Consolidated Bank of Kenya (2015-2018)

Omollo served as a non-executive board member at Consolidated Bank of Kenya, where he chaired the Credit and Finance Committee as well as the Risk and Compliance Committee. This role provided valuable insights into banking and financial management.

4. Lake Basin Development Authority (2019-2022)

As Managing Director of LBDA, Omollo oversaw socio-economic development across 18 counties in the Lake Victoria basin region. This position significantly enhanced his leadership experience and network.

5. Principal Secretary Appointment (2022-Present)

In November 2022, President William Ruto appointed Omollo as Principal Secretary for the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, making him the youngest ever to hold this position. He earns a gross monthly salary of KSh 990,000, comprising:

• House Allowance: KSh 200,000
• Salary Market Adjustment: KSh 196,000

6. Real Estate Investments

Omollo’s wealth primarily comprises pieces of land and property in Kajiado, Machakos, and other strategic locations. His real estate portfolio has appreciated significantly since his 2022 declaration of KSh 450 million net worth.

7. Academic & Consultancy Work

Since 2016, he has been a research fellow and adjunct lecturer at Strathmore University, contributing to the Centre for Research in Therapeutic Sciences (CREATES) and School of Mathematics Sciences. He has also consulted for WHO, AMREF, Hoffman La Roche, and I-TECH.

1. Widows’ Empowerment Programme

Born from his personal experience of being raised by a widowed mother, this program supports widows through financial assistance, business improvement support, and help with children’s education. “Growing up with a widowed mother, I understand the challenges faced by women who are the sole providers for their families,” he explains.

2. Youth Empowerment

Omollo is committed to empowering youth in the fight against drug abuse, crime, and other societal vices. He emphasizes providing young people with opportunities to grow and become productive members of society.

3. Education Support

He has quietly supported his former village school, Rang’i Primary, working with his peers to give back and inspire current students to aim higher. “I have gone back to give something to the school with my peers. When I speak to the current students, they realize that there is a world beyond the village,” he says.
