Steve Thompson Maghana, popularly known as Oga Obinna, was born on June 6, 1990, in Maseno, Nyanza Region. He experienced a challenging childhood that included a period of homelessness, which instilled in him resilience that would later define his career.

He spent his primary school years in Kisumu and part of his high school education there. In Form 3, he moved to Nairobi and completed his secondary education at Eastleigh Education Centre. While studying there, he acted in plays and set book adaptations in various high schools, using the earnings to pay his school fees.

Despite his busy schedule in entertainment, Obinna pursued higher education and attained First Class Honours in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Media and Communication from Mount Kenya University, graduating in December 2025.
